Training

We're really proud of our training.

It's developed by our Effective Practice Manager, Grev Wallington. Grev has over 20 years experience in managing and training appropriate adults. He has also been an AA himself in over 2,000 criminal and terrorism cases. His personal experience provides a wealth of stories that engage learners and enrich learning.

When we deliver training, it is not just another PowerPoint presentation. We adapt our training to suit a range of different audiences.

All of our trainers have experience of being an AA and an AA scheme leader.

We adapt our training to learners' needsprofession, and experience

  • AA schemes

I'm responsible for an organised appropriate adult scheme
    • Are you looking to ensure your appropriate adult scheme delivers a high quality service? NAAN can provide a range of appropriate adults training and support.

Whether you need core training for brand new recruits or refresher sessions for experienced AAs, we'll listen to your needs to deliver training that makes your provision more effective and sustainable.

      Options include:

      • Asking us to deliver your appropriate adult training at your venue or online
      • Building your scheme's capability to deliver its own training to national standards
      • Combining both of the above.

You may also be interested in accessing nationally accredited appropriate adult qualifications.

  • Other professionals

I am sometimes asked to be an appropriate adult as part of my job

Does you team work with children or vulnerable adults who sometimes come into contact with police?

Have you been asked to act as an appropriate adult but been unsure about the role?

Appropriate adults are not always members of a person's family or a dedicated scheme. Professionals and others who are working with a child or vulnerable adult may also be asked to act in the AA role. Your team might be being asked fairly regularly or just occasionally but the potential impact on both the person and their supporter can be very significant.

NAAN can provide appropriate adult training that's tailored to your needs.

  • Individuals

I'd like to join an appropriate adult scheme

Local schemes are responsible for providing training to new appropriate adults.

You don't need to join NAAN or get in touch with us to organise your own training.

If you are acting as an appropriate adult once for someone you know, such as your child, please see our information for family and friends.

  • Police

I am responsible for police officers

Whether police officers work in custody or carry out voluntary interviews, they need to have a firm grasp of the PACE Codes around children, vulnerable people and procedural safeguards (including the AA). A lack of knowledge in this area creates risks for suspects, victims, police and the wider justice system.

The PACE Codes are long, complex and regularly changing. There is strong evidence to suggest that officers need additional training and support in this area.

NAAN provides training materials that can be used to support the training of police officers and staff, on PACE vulnerability and the role of the AA.

You can also commission NAAN to provide tutor-led training in person or online.

If you're not sure whether your team would benefit from this training, try our free online quiz with colleagues at your next meeting. To set up the quiz, click here and then 'Play as guest'.

What do learners say?
